I was still on his lap, both of us naked on the couch. There was no way out. No believable lie to tell Caleb. “What the FUCK is this?!” He bellowed. “Caleb, let me explain.” Mark started, but Caleb heard nothing. He stormed towards us, seething in anger. I thought he would attack Mark, but to my surprise he grabbed me and pulled me away. His strong hand gripped me tightly, and there was nothing I could do but let him steer me towards the corner of the room. He put me behind him, covering me, putting himself in front of me, as if protecting me from Mark. Not letting go of my hand, I don’t think he even realized that I was still completely naked. And so was Mark, who was standing up now in front of the sofa. “He is a kid! What’s gotten into you? I know you’re hurting but that’s not an excuse to attack a kid!” He screamed at Mark. Mark scrambled to get his shorts from the floor and quickly put it on. Sputtering, he said, “You don’t understand, Caleb. This is not a one-time thing.” Oof. As soon as he said it we both knew that was the wrong thing to say. “What? You’ve been taking advantage of him all this time?! How could you do something like that?” Caleb asked incredulously. He was so red, he finally let go of my hand. “Lucas, go to the bedroom and don’t come out until I tell you.” He commanded. Then he stormed towards Mark, fists clenched. I already knew what he was going to do, and there was nothing I could but watch as it unfolded in front of me. “Caleb, no!” I yelled, right before Caleb reached Mark and landed a punch to his face. “Dammit, Caleb!” Mark grimaced as he landed on the floor. I saw Caleb draw his fist back, and I knew he was going to land another punch. I dashed towards him and grabbed his arm. “Caleb!” I yelled, gripping his arm tightly, preventing him from touching Mark. He glared at me, but he thankfully retreated his arm. “What are you doing? He attacked you!” He said. “No, he didn’t! You don’t understand. Just let us explain, Caleb. Please.” I begged. My voice wobbling in fear. Caleb looked awfully confused, his mind turning around the fact that I was trying to defend Mark. The air in the living room was thick with tension, with Caleb giving off vibes that say you should stay the fuck away from him. His fists were still clenched, and he was taking deep breaths. I could only hope he’s doing that to calm himself, not because he’s gearing to attack Mark again. When I deemed it safe, I moved towards the couch and grabbed my clothes to put them on. When I was clothed at last, I stood beside Mark, not touching. Mark stood still, his body set as if preparing for an attack. I had no doubt Mark could hold his own if it came to blows, considering his size. But of course, nobody wants that. They could seriously hurt each other and how would you explain to people what happened if they beat each other black and blue. That one punch was enough. No more. Gathering strength, I faced Caleb. This is an extremely crucial situation. I couldn’t even imagine what will happen to Mark if Caleb turned his back against us and went to the authorities. All because in his head, I was “attacked”. I took a deep breath before I spoke. “Caleb, please understand. Mark did not attack me. This thing between us was purely consensual from the beginning. He did not force me into anything, he did not manipulate me from doing anything I didn’t wanna do. I know how bad it looks like to you, but please don’t take it against us. I love Mark. You yourself noticed how Mark changed from the man he once was before we met each other.” I glanced at Mark briefly, before turning back to Caleb. “We will tell you everything you want to know, just to prove to you that this is more than what you think it is.” Hoping he would listen to any of what I said, I was gutted when he didn’t hear any of it. Caleb just stared, not budging from his spot. “Go to the bedroom, Lucas,” He said dangerously, his voice low and his jaw clenched. I bristled at his menacing tone. Fear gripped my bones. His eyes throwing daggers at Mark. “I need to talk to Mark, not you.” Mark heaved a sigh, then nodded defeatedly before turning to me. “Go. I’ll come to you when it’s over.” I glanced at Caleb, and prayed hopelessly that he would understand. I don’t know how this night will end. It could end very badly, considering my streak of bad luck, but Caleb’s not a bad guy right? Feeling helpless, I marched out of the living room and found my way to the bedroom. I felt nervous, time seemed to slow down in that room. I could still hear their muffled voices arguing, but I couldn’t pick up anything. Fuck, is it going well? I distracted myself in the meantime, walking around Caleb’s bedroom. It was definitely a man’s bedroom, devoid of any decorations. Just a bed, a nightstand, closet and mirror. I walked towards the nightstand and saw some pictures. It was Caleb, with a big smile on his face, standing in the middle with his arms around his parents. It must have been taken during his college graduation day, he looked so young then. His face was rounder, more youthful, but his smile was the same. Incredibly handsome, he must have broken a lot of hearts in college. There was another picture of Caleb but this time he was with a woman. It could only be his girlfriend, considering the intimate way they gazed at each ardahan escort other in the picture. Last I saw was a picture of Caleb and Mark. Arms around each other’s shoulders, grinning at the camera. They were at the station, their uniforms on, probably taken during their first days. Being fresh out of college, their bodies were still leaner, yet to be formed by the grueling hard work of being a fireman. They looked so happy with each other, total best buds, inseparable. And now here they are, arguing in the next room, because of me. Their friendship of ten years crumbling to pieces. Anxiety gripped me again, knowing I can’t do anything at the moment. I could still hear their muffled voices, but it only served to amplify my nerves. Not being able to know how it’s going is torture. It was thirty minutes later when I heard the voices in the next room stop. Lying in bed, I sat up immediately. My heart pounded in my chest as I struggled to hear anything. But there was nothing. Until I heard the front door slam shut. I jumped as it slammed, my hand gripping my chest in shock, then a few moments later Mark came in the room. His downcast face said it all, and suddenly I was washed with grief. Fuck, it did not go well. Mark sat beside me on the edge of the bed, looking utterly defeated. “How did he take it?” I asked softly. With a sigh, he said, “Not good. I told him everything, he asked questions about how it happened and why I did it. He closed on me. I’ve never seen him look at me like that, as if I’m some stranger. I could feel him slowly starting to pull away and forget who I am. In the end, he just stood up and walked out. That’s it.” Realizing I held my breath this whole time, I breathed out as it dawned on me that Caleb really walked out. “Oh, Mark. I’m sorry.” I said. He nodded, then grabbed my hand, before looking at me. “Not your fault. I guess it’s really just you and me now.” I squeezed his hand, offering strength and support. “We’re gonna be okay.” I said softly. With a nod, he stood up and gestured towards the door. “I need to pack my stuff. We have to leave, I don’t think I’m welcome here anymore.” Mark said, then seeing the question written on my face, he continued, “We’ll stay in a hotel for a few days. Until I can find an apartment. I’ll see if my buddies know any place available around the area.” We stood there looking at each other, feeling lost and uncertain about everything in the world. I could see how Mark was trying to put up a strong front, but he was no less nervous and scared about all this. The poor man had just lost his wife and his best friend in a span of a week. My turn to grab his hand, I squeezed it once again. “Like I said, we’ll be okay. We’ll handle it.” I said, this time loud enough to convey to him how much I mean it. I have faith in him, I completely trust him. I’ve been homeless lots of times before, but what makes this a lot easier is the fact that atleast this time I am not alone. It was three days later, when Mark and I found an apartment located near the station. With the help of Ryan, he referred us to the landlord, whom he helped one time. It was cheap, and a tiny bit rundown, but it served its purpose. Mark said he would turn it around in no time. The living room was a mess, full of boxes and bags. Mark and I went back to the house that morning to get our things and went straight to the apartment. While busy loading in boxes, Mark’s phone rang and it was Julie’s attorney calling to confirm the dates for the hearing, to which Mark was glad. He said he wanted it to be done as soon as possible. It was a brief call, he quickly thanked the attorney and hung up. I noticed that Mark’s mood soured a bit after that call, being reminded of the divorce, but that was quickly remedied when much to our surprise, Ryan arrived to help with the moving. Soon, the three of us were busy sorting through boxes and putting things in their place. The apartment was a bungalow, with a small living room, one bathroom, a master bedroom and a tiny other bedroom next to it. Supposedly, the tiny bedroom was for me but Mark told me to put my clothes in the closet in the master bedroom together with his. With a whisper, he told me, “That bedroom right there is only for show. You’ll be sleeping with me.” Face blushing a bit, I grabbed the box labeled `beddings’ and went to tidy up “our” bedroom while Mark and Ryan worked on some shelves in the living room. Once done, I went to the kitchen, which was thankfully in good condition, so after just a bit of wiping and cleaning I put the few plates and cups we had inside the cabinets and organized the utensils. It didn’t take much time to put all our stuff in the right place, mainly because we didn’t have much stuff to begin with. We just had our clothes and Mark’s books, everything else in here Mark had bought yesterday. Like the new beds, the simple sofa, and some kitchen supplies. He didn’t take anything from the house that belonged to Julie, even though they bought it together. He said he wanted a fresh start, choosing all the things he would put in the apartment to be new. The guy was still grieving, it’s obvious he’s still in pain but he was just trying his best not to dwell too much into it. So in my part, I try to distract him as well. He would be coming back to work in two days, he would be busy again and that’s good because it would help keep his mind off of things. A few hours later the sun had set, and everything was sorted. All the boxes had been thrown out and Mark, Ryan and I can finally sit down in the silence. As we looked around, we all seemed to collectively notice one thing in the apartment, and that was how barren it was. “You guys need a tv.” Ryan commented, making Mark and I burst into laughter. “We need a lot of things, actually.” Mark replied with artvin escort a chuckle. He’s right, but all of that can wait. We have all the things we need for now. We have a big bed for me and Mark, a small dining table, and a simple but comfortable sofa to lounge in. The place definitely needs new paint, but that can wait along with the other things. What matters is that this place is livable and it is ours. A fresh start, just like he wanted. A couple of hours later, Ryan had just left and Mark and I were cleaning the pizza boxes and the beer cans scattered in the living room. Once done, we lounged on the couch again. This time, being just the two of us now, Mark caught me in his arms and laid me on top of him, my head cradled in his chest. He let out a deep sigh, then started to brush my hair with his fingers. It was relaxing, I found myself burying my face into his chest. In that moment we breathed each other in, both exhausted from the moving, but mostly just exhausted from the last couple of days that felt like it lasted a whole year. Three days living in a motel room, eating off of diners and fast-food restaurants, driving around town looking for apartments, we must have checked more than a dozen apartments. None fit as perfectly as this one. They were either too small, too expensive, or too far. Mark would be coming back to work in two days, and he also told me that he called Rachel, my homeschool teacher, to tell her about our new address. I realized I completely forgot about that, I’ve missed an entire week of school, I have to get back on track. Especially because there’s an exam I have to take in two months to know if I can be in a real school next fall. Seeing the worry on my face, Mark spoke. “Don’t sweat it, Lucas. You’re a great student, she said. You’ll catch up.” He patted my head softly, instantly making me feel better. That got me thinking about my memories of when I was still young, probably six or seven, when I was in first grade. Back then I was still living with my real dad, before he was taken by the cops. I have always been praised by my teachers for being a great student. I remember coming home to my dad and proudly showing him the stars I got from school, and him taking me out for some ice cream because he was so happy for me too. We were poor, he never had a real job, just a couple of odd ones to support me. There were times when he’d come home smelling like paint and cement, then there was also a time when he’d come home covered in grease and smelling like oil. I realize now that he must have worked as a mechanic, or he must have been a construction hand. Either way, no matter what he did I was always so happy just seeing him come home. He was always this happy guy, and I was his world. A few years into being a foster kid, I remember thinking about him at night, when the loneliness starts to become unbearable and I was trying my hardest not to cry or else the other kids in the orphanage will make fun of me. I used to hold on to my memories of his face. His smile, his voice, his eyes. I remember how badly it broke my heart when I turned twelve and I went through a particularly bad year and one night, as I stared at the walls feeling desperately lonely, I realized I had forgotten what he looked like. I remember I cried so hard that night, thinking about how I lost my only memory of him. “You okay?” Mark asked. I nodded, albeit feeling a little melancholy. I got up from the sofa and held out my hand. “Let’s go to bed. Shall we?” I asked. Mark regarded me for a few moments, sensing something wrong, but he let it go, thankfully. I don’t think I’m in a sharing mood tonight anyway. He grabbed my hand and together we went inside our bedroom. I laid down and buried my face in the soft pillows and breathed deeply, while Mark watched me with a guarded smile. “I’m gonna go lock up the house. You get some rest now.” He kissed me goodnight, before stepping out of the room again. I intended to wait for him but my eyes weighed as heavy as the deep longing I could feel in my chest that after I closed my eyes, I fell into a dreamless sleep. The next night, a few of Mark’s buddies from station came. The same ones I met at the bar. “Hey man! What a cool place.” One of the guys said as they sat on the couch looked around the empty place. Mark shook his head and chuckled. “Fucking liar.” He said. “Yeah, you’re right I’m lying.” The guy replied, earning a round of laughter from the others. I remember him as one of the louder guys at the bar that night. One of Mark’s other close friends. “Hey, at least it’s better than the dump these bastards lives in,” he pointed to the fresh recruits grinning beside him. The ones I also met at the bar. “Their place is full of pizza boxes and smells like sex all the time.” The two recruits laughed, as the others whistled and whooped. Laughter flowed freely amongst them, I could see Mark reverting back to his old self little by little. They steered clear of any talk about the divorce and Owen, which I was grateful for because I didn’t want to see Mark subdued when it was turning into such a great night. “By the way, have you guys heard? The chief is retiring.” Mark’s friend said. “About time I think, his wife’s been nagging him to do that for years.” “Who’s going to replace him?” Mark asked. They talked about work stuff for a good hour, exchanging stories about the things that happened at the station while Mark was gone. It was clearly evident how sorry they all were about what happened to Mark. The divorce and the affair. I’ve always known he was loved by his workmates, it was obvious from the way they talk to him. They all admire him so much. I just didn’t know how much until they threw him in for a small surprise. In the middle of the conversation, Mark’s friend suddenly piped up. “Anyway, ataköy escort we got you a little something, buddy.” Confused, Mark looked back and forth at the guys grinning conspiratorially at him. “Now what’s that look for? What did you guys do?” They snickered amongst themselves for a few moments before the two recruits stood up and went out the door. A few moments later, they came back carrying a big rectangular box. “It’s a tv, for your incredibly sad and empty living room.” Mark’s friend announced. “All the guys from the station chipped in, figured you’d like this little gift. Knowing you, you’d never take anything from that house because that’s just who you are.” Mark blushed, and tried very hard to contain his shock but eventually he burst into a big smile. “This is ridiculous. Thank you.” He gave each of them hugs and back slaps. “Who knew being friends with you losers would have some advantages?” Mark teased, making everyone laugh in the room. They stayed for a while, the mood in the house getting much lighter after the surprise. The boisterous laughters filled the house, I could tell they were all doing their best to cheer Mark up, and it was working. Time went by really fast, the banter between them was hilarious, the conversations long, everyone was at ease. It was almost late when they decided to leave. “Gotta head out, man. I got morning shift tomorrow. I’ll see you at the station.” Mark’s friend said, followed by the others. After a round of goodbyes, they were off. As we were cleaning up, there was a soft knock on the door. “Can you get that? Probably one of the guys forgetting something.” He was sitting on the floor of the living room. In front of the new tv. He was busy reading the manual, trying to set it up, with the box, styrofoams, and some wires scattered around him. Right after the guys left he tore through that box like a kid receiving his Christmas gift. It was so sweet, he said he couldn’t wait to set it up and watch the game. There was another knock, so I walked towards the door expecting one of Mark’s buddies saying he forgot his wallet or his keys. But when I opened the door, I was surprised at the sight of one familiar man. “Caleb.” I gasped. Mouth hanging slightly open, I asked, “What are you doing here?” He looked at me with guarded eyes. “Uh, hey kid. Can I come in?” He asked tentatively. Before I could answer yes, Mark’s voice rang out. “Lucas, who is it?” He said. I looked back at Caleb, and I saw his eyes point towards Mark, who had his back to us. Then he looked back at me. Not knowing what to say, I motioned him inside. Once I had the door closed. I cleared my throat. “It’s your friend.” I said to Mark. Still not turning, and still busy with the remote in his hand, he asked again. “Who?” I don’t know if I had just imagined it or not but I thought I heard Caleb chuckle at that. But before I could think about it more, Caleb spoke up. “It’s me, Caleb.” Mark’s head turned almost immediately when he heard. His face changing from what once was glee to apprehension. “Oh.” He said meekly. Then he stood up from the floor. Clearing his throat, he asked Caleb. “What’s up? How’d you know where we live?” His tone guarded, devoid of any inflection or emotion. “The police officer. Ryan, I think. I asked him.” Caleb answered. Nodding, Mark repeated his earlier question. “So, what’s up? Why did you come here?” There was a long pause, before Caleb took a deep breath and said, “Can we talk?” Mark regarded Caleb for a moment before his eyes turned to me. Without words, I immediately knew what he was trying to tell me. “I’ll be in the bedroom.” I said before walking away. I didn’t get far though, because Caleb spoke again. “Actually, I think you should hear what I need to say too, Lucas.” Not knowing what to do, I turned to Mark. Who then nodded. “Alright. Let’s sit on the couch.” Once seated, Caleb did not waste any time. “Look, I came here to apologize to you. Both of you. I spent a lot of time the past few days thinking about… about the uhh…” He pointed his hand towards me and Mark, and gestured nonsensically. “You know… your relationship. And I just want to say I’m sorry for losing my shit. I didn’t mean to hit you, Mark. It’s just that when I saw what you and Lucas were doing, I just… I thought you lost your mind. This kind of thing is not something I imagine you would do in my wildest dreams. It caught me off guard, but I`ve always known you to be the most decent guy in the world and I know you wouldn’t hurt a soul, so it made me realize how incredibly unfair it was for me to… I don’t know… condemn what you have with Lucas just like that.” He took a deep breath after that, and looked back and forth between me and Mark with remorse in his eyes. “Anyway, Lucas was right. I can’t deny the fact that you’ve changed, you’ve become so much happier since he came and that’s enough to convince me. So bottomline is, I may not completely understand what this is but I will try my best to be supportive. Especially during this time, with the divorce and all. You were there for me when I went through some tough times. So I’m gonna be here for you too.” After his speech I realized I was wearing the goofiest smile on my face. I was incredibly touched by what Caleb said, and I could tell Mark was too. He was just taking his time absorbing it. After several moments, Mark smiled as well. “Apology accepted. And thank you.” Caleb heaved a sigh, before softly chuckling to himself. “So… are we buddies again?” He joked. Laughing, Mark grabbed him for a bro hug. “Yeah whatever, just don’t hit me again.” They hugged it out for a few seconds before separating and looking at me. Caleb gave me a nod as an offering of truce, and I was touched even more. Because he didn’t need to do that, but he still acknowledged me. He has no idea how gratifying it is to not be overlooked and for once be treated as a person with feelings. So I nodded back. Hoping I could convey without words how much I appreciate him for being there for Mark. And how glad I am that this time I’m glad he’s staying.
